Historical Context:

At the time of the invention of the atomic bomb, World War II (or WWII) was taking place. WWII was a worldwide conflict that included many of the world's nations and all the of the great powers. These nations were organized into two opposing sides, one was called the Allies, and the other the Axis. This war included over 100 million participants, labeling it the most widespread war in the world's history.

The start of the war is traced back to September, 19 when the Germans invaded Poland, and then declared war. By the end of the war, the United States, as well as the Soviet Union had emerged the world's leading superpowers. With these two competing nations ahead, the path for the cold war was paved.
