Coppers atomic number is 29 and is one of three “money metals” on the periodic table. It has an extremely high melting point of 1083 degrees Celsius. Although Copper is not naturally very shiny, when polished it reflects a bright red-orange.


Copper is not a very reactive metal, but has a tendency to turn green over time when in contact with air this process is called oxidation. The green coating is called Patina and its purpose is to prevent the metal from corroding any further. Other than being malleable and ductile, copper is a great conductor, which is why it is used so often in heating and electricity.

Copper is believed to have been discovered by the egyptians (3900 B.C.E.) Today, we use copper for many different purposes, we are able to use this metal for such a vast variety of purposes due to its specific chemical and physical properties, such as malleability and ductility, and conductivity.

Copper is used for water pipes and plumbing, currency, electric wires, heating, construction, in alloys such as bronze or brass, protective coatings like in nickel and zinc, utensils and even in animal feeds and fertilizers as a micronutrient. Copper is a very good conductor of electricity and heat which is a result of coppers low hardness.(Copper's low hardness, as well as it's ductility and malleability is attributed to its weak bonds.) It is therefore substituted for aluminum in many circuits and machines. Copper is easily combined with other elements, creating many different alloys, these alloys are used often in the jewelry buisness. Combining copper with other metals alters its characteristics, for example it changes the melting point of the original metal. Copper is also water resistant, which is why it is used for plumbing and roofing.

Copper, silver and gold are in group 11 of the periodic table, and they share certain attributes: they have one s-orbital electron on top of a filled d-electron shell and are characterized by high ductility and electrical conductivity.

Surprising and interesting fact
together with osmium (bluish), and gold (yellow), copper is one of only three elemental metals with a natural color other than gray or silver.[7] The characteristic color of copper results from the electronic transitions between the filled 3d and half-empty 4s atomic shells – the energy difference between these shells is such that it corresponds to orange light. The same mechanism accounts for the yellow color of gold.[2]

Unfortunately, Copper is a mineral, meaning it is relatively rare. -- price it higher?
